Most leadership development focuses on a single direction within the organizational hierarchy: downstream to subordinates. While it is important to be a good boss, leadership is much more than that. The best leaders learn to lead well in all directions: upward to their superiors and across among their peers. And all leadership starts with self-leadership. This often overlooked or misunderstood leadership principle is essential to build a thriving and productive organizational culture. This topic is based on Jon's new book, Mission-Critical Leadership: How Smart Managers Lead Well in All Directions, published in April 2021.

The journey to the C-Suite is a winding path up a mountain, with roadblocks, switchbacks and avalanches along the way (as well as the occasional gondola that zips you quickly to dizzying heights). David Smith, author of Good Guys and Athena Rising, shares the the research-based evidence and elements of excellent gender-inclusive allyship and mentorship, including many best practices. Participants learn the business case for male engagement in gender equality while integrating why it is good for both men and women. Using social science evidence, he explores the possible challenges of cross-gender professional relationships. Using his research and organizational best practices, he provides the "how to" for men, women, and organizational leaders who want to be intentional, inclusive, and excellent allies, leveraging mentorship, sponsorship, and workplace partnership to create a more diverse workforce.

For if one's mind is occupied by anxious thoughts, there is less space available for critical thinking and problem-solving. The COVID-19 pandemic intensified an already demanding profession.
