Writing Reports for the Intended User

Date
November 11, 2013

Report writing — it’s where the rubber meets the road in our profession. But the best valuation analysis will be
lost if not wrapped in readable content. And the best content may not be read if it’s mired in boilerplate or buried in
an unnecessarily long report. Thus, the hallmark of success for effective report writing is writing to the level of the
intended user — no more, no less. This session focuses on the best practices of relevance, reliability and replicability — and compliance with professional standards — when writing for an informed user of a report (e.g., the IRS or a Big 4 accounting firm) and how less can be more and be more appreciated. Participants will:
• Develop the most efficient report layout for an informed user
• Learn the proper use of appendices and exhibits
• Discover how valuation schedules can carry some of the report-writing load
• Review “live” report excerpts that illustrate the presentation
