Is Help on the Way from the IRS for this Filing Season?

Overview

The IRS has an unprecedented number of unprocessed returns and correspondence in comparison to years before the pandemic resulting in the issuance of numerous incorrect and mistargeted notices, liens and levies. Additionally, the IRS is answering a record-low percentage of calls from all hotlines, including the Practitioner Priority Service (PPS) line which prevents the resolution of straightforward issues. In response to these issues, the Tax Practitioners United for Taxpayer Relief Coalition was formed and has come up with recommendations to help the IRS mitigate the burden on taxpayers and practitioners. This coalition is a diverse group of stakeholders from the tax practitioner community including those representing Latinos, African Americans, small businesses and low-income taxpayers.

In this session, the stakeholders will discuss the current issues that taxpayers and tax practitioners are facing as they enter a third filing season during the COVID pandemic. You will also learn about the coalition’s recommendations that the group believes the IRS is able to immediately implement to provide relief to taxpayers and practitioners. Hear about the steps the coalition is taking, including conversations on Capitol Hill, to ensure the recommendations are adopted. Finally, the stakeholders will discuss their suggestions to help practitioners navigate a challenged tax administration system.
