Practical concerns of grant-making will be covered, starting with when a grant is a grant and not a fee-for-service contract. The session will then help ensure understanding of the nuances of the exempt status of different grantees and proper documentation of grant files. Attendees will gain an understanding of:
• The importance of the exempt status of the grantee, including their public support ratio
• How to work with unusual grantees such as startups, small or foreign grantees
• When foundations use back office or equivalency determination service providers or donor-advised funds to enhance in-house grant-making capacity
