Tom Brown J.D.

Tom Brown is a Senior Managing Director at FTI Consulting and is based in New York. He is a member of the Global Risk & Investigations Practice (GRIP) in the Forensic & Litigation Consulting segment and specializes in cyber security and investigations.
From 2002 to 2014, Mr. Brown served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the U.S. Attorneys Office for the Southern District of New York, where he was Chief of the Computer and Intellectual Property Crime Unit.
Mr. Brown has unique and extensive experience investigating and prosecuting a wide range of complex, cross-border cyber and intellectual property crimes and white collar frauds, including data breaches, theft of trade secrets and economic espionage, malware distribution, illegal spam, online advertising fraud, criminal copyright offenses, money laundering, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act violations, securities fraud, bankruptcy fraud, and tax fraud, among other things. Mr. Brown also has unique experience involving virtual currencies such as WebMoney and Bitcoin, as well as cyber national security matters.
As a federal prosecutor, Mr. Brown supervised and led some of the most complicated and technologically challenging cyber investigations in the world, including cases involving the operators of Silk Road, a $1.2 billion underground drug website; the prolific hacktivist groups Anonymous and LulzSec; Liberty Reserve, an online digital currency used by criminals worldwide to launder more than $6 billion in suspected criminal proceeds; Rove Digital, a massive online click fraud scheme that infected more than 4 million computers; hackers who broke into the NASDAQs computer system; and Samarth Agrawal, who was convicted of stealing high-frequency trading code from Societe Generale. In 2010, Mr. Brown created an innovative strategy to combat Internet piracy, which formed the basis of Operation In Our Sites, an ongoing, international intellectual property rights enforcement campaign coordinated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
In addition to conducting 10 jury trials and arguing a number of appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, Mr. Brown also obtained favorable decisions in important cyber-related legal matters with national impact, including a significant electronic surveillance matter and a case of first impression concerning the compelled production of data stored overseas by Internet service providers. In light of his deep experience, Mr. Brown also served as an advisor to other prosecutors around the country on cyber crime and electronic evidence matters. In addition, Mr. Brown is an Adjunct Professor of Law at Fordham University School of Law, where he teaches a seminar on cyber crime.
Mr. Brown also frequently lectures on cyber crime and cyber security issues to legal, business and law enforcement groups.
Mr. Brown is a graduate of Carleton College and received his J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School. He is a member of the New York Bar.
