Karen M. Schiller

Commissioner, Small Business/Self-Employed Division, IRS

Karen M. Schiller is the Commissioner, Small Business/Self-Employed Division (SB/SE), where she oversees taxpayer programs and services, affecting the nation’s 45 million small business and self-employed individuals. She is responsible for providing executive leadership and direction to a nationwide staff of approximately 28,000 employees who are responsible for service and enforcement programs for taxpayers who file personal, corporate, flow-through, employment, excise and estate and gift tax returns.

Prior to this assignment she was Acting Director of Rulings and Agreements for Exempt Organizations in the Tax Exempt and Government Entities Division providing leadership to staff primarily in Washington DC and Cincinnati. During this challenging time for EO, Karen provided leadership and innovations to enhance the existing processes in place for the approval of tax exempt applications and helped move the organization to become more efficient and self-sustaining.

Previously, Karen has held several executive positions in SB/SE Examination in both headquarters as well as field operations. As Director, Exam Planning & Delivery, she was responsible for overseeing Examination Return Selection and Workload Planning and Analysis. As Director, Exam Operations Support, she provided leadership support for critical IT systems and the hiring/training functions. From 2009-2010, Karen served as the acting Area Director, Examination Area – South Atlantic.

Karen began her career in 1987 as a Revenue Agent in San Diego, California. She received her Bachelor of Business Administration degree in accounting from National University in San Diego, California. Karen is a graduate of the 2009 Candidate Development Program.
