JOE B. BROWN Magistrate Judge Brown received his J.D. from Vanderbilt University in 1965, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif. He is admitted to practice in Kentucky and Tennessee, and before the United States Supreme Court. Following law school, Mr. Brown served as a Judge Advocate in the U.S. Army from 1965 until 1971. He continued to serve in the reserve until his retirement with the rank of Colonel in June of 1992. Mr. Brown joined the U.S. Attorney’s office as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in June of 1971. In 1981, he was appointed U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee. During his 21 years of service in the U.S. Attorney’s office, he was actively involved in criminal trial work. He prosecuted a number of major fraud cases and argued over 200 cases in the Sixth Circuit. He did extensive work with sentencing guidelines. Mr. Brown joined the U.S. Trustee program in 1991 as a Special Assistant U.S. Trustee and the National Coordinator for Criminal Bankruptcy Fraud. He wrote much of the U.S. Trustee Manual on Criminal Fraud. He reviewed all criminal referrals from U.S. Trustees and worked with U.S. Attorneys and investigative agencies on criminal prosecutions. He lectured extensively to various groups on all aspects of criminal bankruptcy law. Mr. Brown was appointed a United States Magistrate Judge for the Middle District of Tennessee on August 3, 1998. He retired in August of 2006 and has been serving in recall status since then. He has taught courses in “Pretrial Litigation” at Vanderbilt and classes in “Federal Criminal Law” at the Nashville School of Law. Hobbies include Competitive Marksmanship, Scuba Diving , Flight Instruction and work with the Boy Scouts and the Civil Air Patrol. Married To Marilyn for 53 years with 2 children and 6 grandchildren.
