Brian Barnier

Brian Barnier is a business leader focused on improving corporate performance and valuation with a unique risk lens that combines growth company and turnaround approaches to improving business model design and execution.

He brings experience in industries including financial, technology, industrial and health care. He has provided accepted comments to Basel rulemaking. He has served on a range of non-profit and smaller company boards. An NACD member, he is also evaluated through Board Bona Fide.

Previously at IBM, Alcatel-Lucent and AT&T, he led in challenging roles requiring matrix management, strategic execution, organizational change and bridging business and IT. He led teams to 9 patents. He co-holds the copyright on the Value-Added Diamond planning model.

He authored The Operational Risk Handbook (Harriman House, 2011), contributed to Risk Management in Finance (Wiley, 2009) and Managing Risk and Performance (Wiley, 2014), and has penned over 100 articles. He is interviewed widely (including from the NYSE and NASDAQ MarketSite) by media serving multiple countries.

In addition to his service for the ICGN, he was selected one of distinguished fellows of OCEG (the think tank that applies Governance, Risk and Compliance to achieving principled performance). He serves on committees of the Retirement Income Industry Association and contributed to the curriculum for the Retirement Management Analyst designation. He serves on the editorial panels of Taylor & Francis EDPACS, the Association for Financial Professionals Risk! newsletter and the ISACA Journal.

He has been an adjunct professor in managerial finance, economics and operations at the graduate level in the US, and guest lecturer in US, Russia and Mexico. He has taught continuing education classes for finance, risk, legal, audit and IT professionals. He earned a BBA and MBA from The University of Michigan, with Distinction, Financial Management Honor Society and Beta Gamma Sigma.
