Terry is the partner in charge of the Compensation and Benefits (CAB) practice for the West region with more than 22 years of business experience providing compensation and benefits consulting assistance to Fortune 1000 companies and privately held companies. Terry was previously a partner at another Big 4 firm prior to rejoining KPMG in August 2016.

Professional and industry experience
Terry has extensive knowledge serving as an external consultant for public and private companies across various industries as well as not-for-profit entities. Terry spends significant time focusing on equity compensation, deferred compensation, golden parachutes and payroll issues. Outside of compensation and benefits, Terry has extensive experience in employee benefits in captive insurance, 401(a) and 403(b) retirement plans, and executive tax home identification. Further, Terry spends significant time working with internal audit departments as a subject matter specialist regarding all of the areas identified above.

Key areas of experience
Responsible for identifying and delivering compensation and benefits services nationally. Particular areas of focus include:

  • Extensive experience working with large outsourced internal audit projects in the Human Resources area such as employee life cycle, payroll, stock compensation, retirement programs, health and welfare programs, executive fringe benefits and bonus plans, and performance management systems.
  • Consulted with large multinational companies regarding global stock compensation plans, outlining both U.S. and foreign income and social tax implications, stock plan administrator selection, and assistance coordinating equity transition from one vendor to another.
  • Extensive experience and expertise with Golden Parachute issues under IRC sec. 280G, including leading large scale projects for multi-billion dollar acquisitions.
  • Extensive experience correcting qualified retirement plan violations through IRS approved programs, representing clients in IRS audits, and providing proactive consulting advice to avoid compliance failures.

Publications and speaking engagements
Terry is a frequent speaker at many trade organizations as well at many local and regional business organizations regarding compensation and benefits issues. Terry has spoken at national business organization meetings on the topic of employee benefits and captive insurance. Terry has written several articles about IRS and DOL compliance issues and has frequently contributed an annual update to The Tax Advisor on employee benefit issues.
