Description

This session will discuss a number of important divorce tax issues CPAs should know. The topics include pre-marital considerations, reviewing the estate plan, the sale or transfer of a home, income and gift tax issues in property settlements, stock options and deferred compensation, IRAs and divorce, decanting to protect trust assets and the effect of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 on divorce.

Learning Objectives:
  • Learn the how the use and ownership of a house can be attributed from one spouse to another for purposes of qualifying for the $250,000/$500,000 exclusion on the sale of a principal residence
  • Learn how IRAs, deferred compensation and stock options are treated for tax purposes in a divorce
  • Learn how the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 has affected tax planning for divorce.
