The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) is a relatively small organization with a very big job. Their role as the guardians of our tax system makes them responsible for monitoring the fair administration of our tax laws. Their mission is to ensure that the IRS “is accountable for the trillions of dollars in tax revenues it collects each year.” TIGTA’s responsibilities include looking inside and outside of the IRS for risk identification and mitigation. Increasingly they are called on to monitor scam artists and impersonators that present an increasing information security challenge. The presentation will describe the challenges of protecting our tax system considering the IRS’s efforts to embrace advancing technologies, cyber-threats and society’s demands for real time, on-line answers.
